Post Operative Care
Opting for an overseas medical procedure raises concerns as to appropriate after care, especially when returning home. Many factors are involved and do depend upon:
- the surgery performed
- how the recovery is progressing
- the individual requirements of the patient.
For example, a breast augmentation usually requires just one overnight stay in hospital, while an abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck), requires a five-day hospital stay for observation.
Most surgeons recommend a minimum of seven days (post surgery, in the same destination) to enable adequate follow-up and allow the surgeon to monitor and possibly treat the area.
Rest and recuperation is essential for physical and emotional recovery, and a hurried itinerary will diminish your professional after care, as the surgeon and medical team will be unable to monitor you when you have already left the country.
Staying close by for a week or two is a better option, allowing for closer medical care and monitoring, should any post-surgery complications arise. Always remember to follow your surgeon’s pre-op and after care instructions, regardless where you choose to stay (and for how long).
