Weight Loss Surgery

Sleeve Gastrectomy is one of the most effective and widely performed bariatric procedures for sustainable weight loss.

Excess weight can develop for many reasons including genetics, lifestyle, hormonal factors, or long-term struggles with diet and weight management. When traditional methods such as diet and exercise have not produced long-term results, bariatric surgery may be recommended to assist with weight loss and improve overall health.

Sleeve gastrectomy works by reducing the size of the stomach, limiting how much food can be consumed while also helping reduce hunger hormones. This combination supports long-term weight management and can improve many obesity-related health conditions.

Surgical Procedure

Sleeve gastrectomy is a minimally invasive weight loss procedure performed using laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery.

During the procedure, the surgeon removes approximately 75–80% of the stomach, leaving a smaller, narrow “sleeve-shaped” stomach. The remaining stomach is about the size and shape of a banana.

Because the stomach is significantly smaller, patients feel full after eating much smaller portions of food. The surgery also reduces the production of the hormone ghrelin, which helps control hunger, meaning many patients experience a noticeable reduction in appetite following the procedure.

Unlike some other bariatric procedures, sleeve gastrectomy does not involve rerouting or bypassing the intestines, allowing food to pass through the digestive system normally.

Pre Operative Care

Before surgery, please inform your surgeon of any allergies, medical conditions, and all medications you are currently taking (both prescription and non-prescription).

Patients may be asked to undergo blood tests and medical assessments prior to surgery to ensure they are suitable candidates for the procedure.

To reduce the risk of complications, patients may be advised to:

  • Stop smoking several weeks before surgery
  • Avoid medications that increase bleeding risk (such as aspirin) as directed by the surgeon
  • Follow a specific pre-surgery diet if recommended
  • Arrange support for the recovery period

Following all pre-operative instructions provided by your surgeon is essential for a safe procedure and optimal recovery.

Post Operative Care

After sleeve gastrectomy surgery, patients will usually remain in hospital for 1–3 days for monitoring and recovery.

During the initial recovery period, patients will follow a carefully structured diet plan beginning with liquids, progressing to pureed foods, and gradually returning to solid foods over several weeks.

Some swelling, discomfort, and fatigue are normal during the early recovery stage. Pain is typically well managed with prescribed medication.

Patients are encouraged to begin light movement shortly after surgery to promote circulation and healing. Most patients are able to return to light daily activities within a few weeks, although strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by the surgeon.

Long-term success depends on maintaining healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and attending follow-up appointments with your medical team.

Risks and Complications

Like all surgical procedures, sleeve gastrectomy surgery has its own set of risks and side effects.

Educate

Knowing what complications may arise, as well as what can prevent them, will help patients enjoy a positive experience.

Possible Complications
  • Infection
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Adverse reaction to anesthesia
  • Blood clots
  • Leakage from the staple line
  • Acid reflux or digestive discomfort
  • Nutritional deficiencies if dietary guidelines are not followed

In order to prevent any serious difficulties, patients are strongly urged to follow all instructions provided by their surgeon.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
