MORE than half of Australians are thinking about having
plastic surgery or having their face injected with chemicals to look
better, an independent survey into cosmetic intervention has found.
A survey of 2211 people by NEWS.com.au and research company CoreData
found 60.8 per cent of respondents have thought about having plastic
surgery.
Plastic surgery has gone mainstream and the stigma associated with it
has fallen, with many people not shy of telling their fiends and family
that they had work done.
Cosmetic surgery stories are covered extensively in the media and shows
like Nip/Tuck and Extreme Makeover have made it so much more accessible
to people - many people don't feel ashamed discussing it."
The most commonly requested procedures? Well the lure of big breasts
hasn’t lost its grip, with breast enlargement the most popular cosmetic
surgery procedure, followed by rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, tummy tucks
and liposuction.
Face lifts used to be thought of as “the end of the line” with plastic
surgery, but attitudes have changed and now it is a very
commonly-requested procedure from above the age of 40. Women are
electing to have years taken off their faces with the skills of our

Procedure of the month – LASIK LASER EYE SURGERY |
|
LASIK is an outpatient surgical procedure. The only anesthetic is an eye
drop that numbs the surface of the eye. The surgery takes about fifteen
minutes for each eye.
LASIK which is an acronym for combining PRK or excimer with another
procedure which enables Dr. Somchai to bypass the step of removing the
epithelium of the cornea. A special instrument called a keratome is used
to make a thin flap like a lid in the cornea leaving the epithelium
alone. The flap is lifted and the excimer laser is used to reshape the
cornea and the flap closed. The cornea still has all of its structures
intact and there is essentially no recovery time or discomfort at all.
Nothing has to grow back. LASIK also had the advantage of being more
effective in nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and when
necessary, enhancements are easily performed by lifting the flap and
applying laser.
