Garments
About & Why
In choosing to have an aesthetic or reconstructive surgery procedure it is vital to consider and understand the importance
of having a surgical compression garment. Post surgery you may experience some discomfort, pain, stiffness,
or temporary numbness. Trauma in the surgical area leads to inflammation.
Wearing a good quality fitted compression garment after surgery is vital to your healing and the benefits of accurate
compression and support can reduce the risk of seromas, lymphedema, hematomas, and skin unevenness. Other benefits include:
- Improve blood circulation and reduces fluid build up
- Minimise swelling after the procedure
- Flush the body out of potential harmful fluids
- Promotes proper skin adhesion to newly contoured areas
- Holds surgical dressings in place until removed
- Supports incision to heal properly
- Accelerate the healing process
Wearing a non-medical garment from your local store that is not specifically made for a cosmetic or medical procedure (such as off-the shelf girdles, athletic shorts and bras) can unnecessarily:
- Increase the possibility of fluid accumulation under the dermal layer
- Prolong your recovery time
- Promotes swelling that can cause tapes, sutures, staples, or other fastenings that close a surgical site to break or dislocate
- Increased discomfort
Depending on your surgeon and procedure, you may need to wear your compression garments during both Stage One (initial 1-2 weeks
of post-op) and Stage Two (2-8 weeks post-op) of recovery. Additionally, with a recommended wear schedule of up to 23 hours a day,
it is imperative that a compression garment be designed with comfort, durability and hygiene in mind. Patient compliance can be
directly tied to the comfort and proper fit of a compression garment and optimal outcome.
